Some of my favorite beaches in the world are in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The North Pacific coast is home to some of the most diverse tropical beaches in the world (white sand, black sand, shell beaches, reef breaks, point breaks, and beach beach breaks,…). Did you know: Guanacaste is the only tropical rain forest in the Pacific with a dry season? Take advantage of the temperate climate from December through February when rain is rarely seen.

While these beaches are becoming more-and-more developed, there are still many gems that are worth a short drive from town. Here’s a list my favorites:

1. Bahia de los Piratas

This beach is close to Playa Grande but much less traveled. Many locals say it’s their favorite beach in the region.

2. Playa Avellanas

There’s something for everyone at Avellanas. It’s a massive beach and far from the crowds of Tamarindo. Order food and drinks at Lola’s and kick back.

3. Marbella

One of the best and most remote surf spots in the area (well, for the ones that are accessible by car). This beach is pretty exposed so you do have to catch it when the conditions are right — when they are, you can expect hollow, overhead sets.

4. Playa Langosta

Just around the bend from Tamarindo lies this pristine paradise. Cross the river during low tide and you’ll have the beach to yourself.

5. Playa Conchal

A lot has changed since I first visited this beach almost 12 years ago. It was my favorite then and it’s still near the top. If you’re seeking calm and crystal blue water for snorkeling, this is your spot.

6. Playa Carrillo

Carrillo is what you imagine when dream of Costa Rican beaches: calm turquoise water and palm tree lined beaches. It’s the southern-most beach on the list but the perfect day trip from Tamarindo (1 1/2 hours). This beach is made for family picnics (tables, grills, shade) so pack a lunch, fill the cooler with Pilsen, and spend the day here. If you need a little more activity, drive 5 minutes north to Samara where you can rent paddle boards, kayaks, jet skis, etc.

7. Playa Prieta

This beach is hard to find (and that’s part of it’s charm). Drive 10 minutes past Playa Potrero; there will be a small brown and yellow, hand-carved sign directing you down a very sketchy dirt road. Take it past the houses and through the jungle; you’ll drive straight into a secluded cove.

8. Playa Tamarindo

Tamarindo boasts the best sunsets on the planet. Period. Go to El Be Club at 5pm, order some frosty Imperiales, and enjoy the show.

9. Playa Grande

Playa Grande is Tamarindo’s closest and most consistent break. It has the same spectacular sunsets as Tamarindo, if you want to have one of the most epic sunset sessions of your life.

10. Playa Negra

One of the most well-known surf spots in the region due Bruce Brown’s surf classic, Endless Summer 2. Despite its popularity it’s is still one of the best breaks in the area.
