In my opinion, if you truly want to experience Marrakech, you MUST stay at a riad within the walls of the medina (i.e. old city). Many riads in Marrakech are historical landmarks and former mansions owned by European aristocrats during the French occupation in Morocco. Each riad offers its own unique and ornate architecture, decorated with hand-carved plaster and local heirlooms.

Moroccan riads are out of this world (5-star luxury) and very affordable (some under $100/night). I’ve done extensive research on these, and here are my Top 5 riads (in no particular order) in the Marrakech Medina:

Palais Sebban

This 19 room property was originally constructed in 1400 AD and occupies the mansion of a former governor who lived here with his four wives. Palais Sebban is built in the renowned ksour palaces district, and is surrounded by several 5 star riads.

The property is now owned by Madame Françoise, the daughter of the architect Jean-Pierre, who meticulously cares for this luxurious property. Inside the main lobby, you’ll find the original, hand-carved plaster ceiling that resembles the Moorish Palaces in Spain, like La Alhambra in Granada.

Like many riads, each guest room features its own unique theme and hand crafted doors, furniture and fixtures. Here is a view of the of my room from across one of the courtyards in our riad.

In addition to the numerous courtyards, there are several alcoves throughout the property. These peaceful reading and tea rooms all have their own unique style. This one, just off the main lobby, was one of the most modern and colorful.

I stayed here in May 2017 and it has everything you’ll want: pool, gardens, hammam (spa), bar (these can be hard to find in the medina), views (you can see the snow-capped Atlas Mountains from the terrace), and gorgeous Morocco-Andalusian architecture.

Riad Kniza

Riad Kniza is one of the highest rated riads in Marrakech. It’s on the more expensive side but it’s incredibly luxurious: the service, the smells, the food (it’s all first class). The owner of this riad is a VIP tour guide and has given tours to many foreign diplomats and celebrities (he has photos with movie stars and former U.S. Presidents on display).

I stayed here in August 2015. While my stay was fantastic, there are better deals to be found. If you want to live like a Moroccan Sultan, Riad Kniza is the place to do it.

Riad BE Marrakech

I’m a sucker for zellij (intricate, hand-chiseled, geometric tiles set in plaster), and the central courtyard at BE Marrakech has the most beautiful tile work of any riad I’ve seen. The guest rooms are modest compared to the other riads on this list, but the elaborate, zellij encrusted pools make this property worth a visit.

Riad Yasmine

Yasmine is very similar to BE Marrakech but offers a more modern twist on Moroccan architecture. Over the past few years, the yellow cactus statue and pool with a Berber ‘Free Man’ design have become Instagram famous. As a result, you’ll have to book this riad many weeks in advance.

Maison MK

Maison MK is the most modern and chic riad on the list; it’s also home to one of the best restaurants in Marrakech: Bistro MK. After enjoying a fantastic meal by the indoor pool, head upstairs to enjoy hookah on the rooftop, where you will feel like Aladdin.
